By seven the next morning, I woke up to the smell of frying pork and instantly jumped out bed, thinking my son was trying to cook on his own. Don't get me wrong, I was trying to bred him into a man who knew his way around a kitchen, because women love that type of thing, but I wouldn't trust him to be on his own just yet.

When I turned the corner, I saw Brandon standing in front of my stove in a gray button down and black slacks, laying a few pieces of sausage onto a plate on the counter.

"Morning," he told me cheerily. "Get dressed."

"Dressed for what," I asked him skeptically.

"We're going to church."

"You have got to be fucking kidding me."

"Didn't nobody tell your ass to be out all times of the night. Me and BJ went shopping yesterday for what we're wearing today, and your dress is hanging up in the closet. I expect you to be dressed and ready by eight thirty. Service starts at nine."

"Brandon-"

"No back-talk on the Lord's day," he cut me off. "You don't have to give a shit about me, but this was a promise I made to your granny when she came to see me."

"My granny came to see you?"

"Right after you gave birth, she did. She made me promise that on her birthday, after I got out, I would attend a service to show that her family is strong in numbers. I never broke a promise to you, and I damn sure ain't breaking a promise to Miss Cynthia."

How could my granny never tell me this? Probably because of all the times I told her I hated him. Maybe that's why.
